Perl!
Arr, Perl is both extremely versatile and extremely bulky at the same time. Very weird. I'm gonna start perl networking as soon as I can (any book recommendations?), and I'm gonna get right on the crypto stuff. Fun fun fun.

Oh, and my friend doesn't hate me. *dance*

perl networking is so fucking easy. you dont need a book. and the community is great. but alas Perl 5 is not great for huge programs, despite what some people believe. Perl is great for quick hacks and tiny programs, especially networking and string processing, and CGI (check out Mason if you want to do really cool Perl CGI stuff). The stuff is there for making big, complex, applications, but Perl really isn't designed for huge shit. Perl 6 on the other hand... Perl 6, if it delivers what is promised, will be a god amongst mortals. anyways....
IO::Socket - makes Perl networking easy. and networking is already pretty damn easy.

Yeah, but if I don't know the IO::Socket commands it might make it a little bit hard to code with it... don't you think? ;)
